The new Grimes County Rainbow Room resides in a classroom space at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Navasota, TX.
Rainbow Rooms are emergency resource rooms that provide for the basic needs of children and families during times of crisis. Many children are removed from their homes under emergency conditions with only the clothes they have on their backs. CPS caseworkers involved in this removal can visit the Rainbow Room to get new items for these children 24-hours a day, 7-days a week.
Rainbow Rooms are stocked with new items including clothes, baby formula, diapers, hygiene items, school supplies, cleaning supplies, and non-perishable food. These supplies are used to provide adequate care for children who have experienced a traumatic transition. The supplies assist caregivers by providing for the basic needs of the child.
The Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) operates Rainbow Rooms in counties throughout Texas. Most Rainbow Rooms are housed in government buildings, while a smaller number are housed in independent non-profits. These rooms are stocked with a range of new items provided by private monetary donations as well as through the DFPS.
Due to a lack of available space in Grimes County government buildings, the original county Rainbow Room was dismantled a number of years ago. The CPS workers serving the children of Grimes County were having to use the resources of Rainbow Rooms in two adjoining counties, Brazos and Washington, which is not an optimum situation.
Susan Boudreaux, a vestry member of St Paul’s, also sits on the board of the Grimes County Child Welfare Board (CWB). She recognized the need for a more accessible Rainbow Room and knew St. Paul’s had available space. SHe along with vestry member Bonny Burger, took the idea to the CWB and the vestry of St. Paul's. The result was the creation of a unique partnership between Grimes County, the CWB, DFPS, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The Grimes County Rainbow Room is the first ever Rainbow Room to be house in a church.
On Thursday, September 8, 2022, the Navasota Grimes County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting at St. Paul's to welcome the new Grimes County Rainbow Room, which was attended by a large group of supporters.
